A responsible packaging

On August 12, a new EU legislation came into effect that affects all of us who sell products within the EU, the Product Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). But how will it affect us? Will the packaging change? What will we do as suppliers?

There is intensive work underway within the EU to reduce our impact from chemicals and waste. One of the latest measures from the EU is to establish clear frameworks and guidelines for product packaging and packaging for all products placed on the market, i.e. products that are available for sale.

PPWR legislation is comprehensive and takes place in various stages. The first thing that happens is the requirement for traceability and content control, and limits on, among other things, certain heavy metals. For us, as the developers and suppliers of products to you as a customer, this means that together with our subcontractors, we map the contents of the packaging, the production process, and document this. Every packaging that accompanies our products must also be identifiable and labeled so that you can link the packaging to the corresponding certificates and documentation.

For a product, you should be able to obtain a so-called DoC, Declaration of Conformity, which is simply a certificate from us and a declaration showing that the packaging meets the requirements set by the EU for packaging. You should be able to find the contact information for us on each package (via our website address).

We are also working to ensure that all packaging is labeled with a QR code so that you can easily find in-depth information with the certificates and the information you need about the product, as well as the product packaging. This is an ongoing effort.

During a transitional period, the information on our packaging may change depending on when the product became marketable, i.e. before or after August 12th when the law came into effect.

By 2028 the next step in legislation will be taken. This will include requirements for homogenized labeling to enable proper recycling of the packaging, a recycled content percentage for plastic packaging, and by 2030 even requirements for recyclability and more.

We would like to mention that since the legislation is completely new, there is still room for different interpretations and changes may occur in the coming year.

Without pressure, we create opportunities for others
Three years ago, we decided to avoid printing on our cartons and only use labels to clarify product information and brand. The reason is that by avoiding printing, we make it possible for the person who receives the carton to reuse it as it is neutral. By refraining from productification and branding on the carton, we are simply giving the packaging the opportunity for a longer lifespan.

No spill
For several years now, we have also had our own circular packaging management system in our warehouse, where we reuse packaging that arrives at our facility to reduce the need for the production of new packaging.

Through everyday behavioral changes and many small steps, we can make a difference. The journey has only just begun.
